Creative Inspiration through Video Games (Diablo IV)

My name is Rebekka, and I am an artist and illustrator from Mumbai, India. I love creating intricate and abstract descriptive drawings inspired by science fiction, fantasy, fractals, modern life, Japanese culture, and pop culture. I enjoy working with ink and paint. When I’m not working with either of these, you will find me working with paper and quilling.

As an artist who uses traditional mediums to create my art, I have always been curiously inspired by any form of digital art. Game art and design are two of the forms that have recently piqued my interest.

I became aware of the Diablo game franchise fairly late and only began playing it in 2022. My attention was immediately captivated by the baroque gothic style of the game and the character designs.

Most of my ink illustrations explore the zen-like concepts of fractals, its repetitive nature, and its intricate details through feminine ink portraits. Thus, I was particularly drawn to the aesthetics of the many powerful female characters in the Diablo franchise. Each possessing a unique character design, from Blood Raven, to Maghda, Adria, Leah, Andariel, the Countess, and finally my muse for this artwork and the antagonist of Diablo IV, Lilith.

You cannot help but be mesmerised by her demonic beauty. The detailed ridges of her jagged horns, heterochromia of the eyes (i.e., the mismatched eye colour), and her pastel-like skin—I've always found winged creatures to be particularly interesting. In the case of Lilith, her wings have a very dainty yet strong look to them. I’ve tried to interpret this in my art style by combining minute circles to form her wings. Giving them the look of being delicate yet powerful.

Having played both the open beta test and the server slam for Diablo IV, I took inspiration from the Necropolis of the Firstborn and the bloody tumours growing in that location to create Lilith’s venous pattern-like gown.

Seeing that her beauty is infinitely intricate, the stippling technique was the best way to showcase it. For this artwork, I used my Sakura of America and Uni Pin black ink fine-liners (sized 005 and 05). Stippling involves using small dots of ink to build up an image with a mix of line art. This artwork took me approximately 3 months to complete due to the detailing, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

An important aspect of being an artist includes finding inspiration to create art. For me, inspiration has always come from film/character concepts, books, travels, people, and experiences. Even though inspiration exists all around us, there are moments when a lot of artists, like myself, feel uninspired. Having participated in various monthly virtual art challenges to help “spark the creativity”. As fun as they were personally (in their own way), they tend to feel forced and monotonous after a week or so. Over the last couple of months while playing the Diablo games, I have realised the potential video games can have for inspiration and creativity.

  • It stimulates creative thinking.
  • Enjoying a good game with rich visual elements can help with creativity and get your brain back on track.
  • A good distraction will prepare you to tap into your creative flow.
  • Or a good distraction for the mind, period.
  • Lore: reading some good game lore definitely strokes the imagination.
  • Helps in mastering a specific art technique or style.

Using the stippling technique, I am also currently working on a series titled ‘The Angiris Council’.

I look forward to tapping more into this form of creative inspiration and playing more video games in the future.
